I remember standing on the beach in Noosa, watching the sunset. I didn’t see the cloud set blowing through at a furious pace, only the sunset, thinking nothing of it. Then I had the realisation that the movement of the cloud could portray an awesome abstract image. I picked areas of the sky that had a blend of colour, intersected by strings of sweeping cloud. The result, is Brushed. I love the blend of not only the colour of the sunset, but the interruption the clouds have caused, like a painters brush strokes.

PHOTO TIP

On the surface such an image as Brushed may not seem all that complex, but it is more about timing than anything else. I often tell my workshop students to choose an 85 or 100mm lens and build a composition from there. The sky is a great area to start with, by finding patterns in your composition. Challenge yourself to look for a picture within a picture.

A longer exposure on a tripod, will add another dimension to your image as well. It doesn’t matter what you aim your lens at, leave the shutter open for even just a second and see what movement you can capture. You’d be surprised how interesting some images can become.
