ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Sentinels, Wangetti, Queensland – Steve Rutherford Landscape Photography Art Gallery.

This is an unframed, limited edition collection landscape photography print of only 25 units. It is printed on Hahnemuhle Fine Art Pearl papers, structured to refract the highest values in colour and detail. It’s high-quality ink absorbing layer enables exceptional image quality with enormously detailed sharpness, and a very broad colour range, providing archival permanency of your artwork for over 100 years.

CAPTURE DETAILS

On tripod, Canon 5DMk2, 12mm, F14, 2 seconds, ISO 500, no filter, processed in Lightroom.

Located right beside the road to Port Douglas from Cairns, these three trees stood in six inch deep mud. Grouped in such a way that several compositions could be found, I trudged through the mud to find the best, losing a shoe in the process. I loved this composition the most and set about highlighting the doom of the scene with the impending stormy sky overhead and the approaching rains on the horizon. Competing with an incoming tide, I captured these “sentinels” of the coastline as it they were tide markers for nature, just before the rains flooded the area an hour later.

PHOTO TIP

Mud flats can be treacherous to shoot in. Never expect your tripod to stand up straight or still until it is finished sinking in the mud.  Then always remember to wash it out with fresh water. The mud on coastlines can contain salt water which will corrode your tripod in a matter of months. If you are out in dark weather such as this, watch for both rain and lightning. Neither are nice if you hang around too long.
