CAPTURE DETAILS

Canon 5DMk2, 16mm, F11, 1/30th sec, ISO 100, polarizing filter, processed in Lightroom.

I believe this is one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever visited. I was awestruck by the sheer beauty of this place. I literally thought I’d stepped into a postcard. My first inclination was to the typical photographer thing and scurry about trying to capture everything. then I realised, this place isn’t going anywhere. Enjoy it. Have a look around…and go for a swim first. After a good hour, I had seen several places I wanted to explore. This little patch was not nestled away, but smack bang in the middle of the beach. directly behind me was a tourist hut selling all sorts of touristy things. But no funny sun hats for me, I was photographing perfection.

PHOTO TIP

Opportunity overwhelm. Ever heard of it? The saying relates to being completely overwhelmed by too many possibilities in one moment. Being presented with a place like this can make you feel that way. Slow down, observe, breathe deeply, take out your camera, attached a polarizing filter, compose the frame and then take the shot. That’s all I have to give you a tip on this. Pretty simple. Sorry, I’m still looking at the image. Oh, where was I? Polarizing filter, yes, make sure you adjust your polarizing filter to suit the sky, not the scene. Too much can cause a big hump of dark blue in your sky, not an even blue across all of it. Test the filter first by spinning it in your fingers before attaching it to the lens. Find the sweet spot, so you know how much to dial it in by, and watch your glare disappear and the colour become vibrant.
