Probably one of the most photographed surf boats on the Oahu north shore, this crew boat on Waimea Bay sits begging to be photographed. Most photographs depict it with serious waves in the background. I love how the bay in the background is in it’s mid year lull, flat like a lake. It’s almost as though it’s rest time for the crew boat. Waiting for a beautiful sunrise was what was needed to do this image justice.

PHOTO TIP

Predicting sunrise can be a a bit of a science, but composing your image the night before doesn’t have to be. I’ve often visited a place the day before so I have a basic idea of where I’ll need to be prior to sunrise so I’m not running around with my head cut off. Get in the habit of planning your images. Watch the weather forecast, visit the area several times if you need to. There is much merit in knowing an area for your next photograph, rather than just visiting and hoping you get something worthy.
