CAPTURE DETAILS

On tripod, Sony A6000, 20mm, F9, 1/4 sec, ISO 100, no filter, processed in Lightroom.

This image, was captured with one goal in mind. To provide a feeling of tranquility. This was a wild location, but ever so peaceful. It may not seem that way but it was a challenging shot to catch, as the small ripple of waves always seemed to beat me. I was trying to catch that point when the wave sat above the sand, ready to crash. I love the result, almost as if you can see under the little wave.

PHOTO TIP

A slow painterly effect isn’t always necessary for beach photographs. The crash of a wave can also create a sense of anticipation and drama. Even if the wave is small, try placing it in your scene, so you can see the whole background. Use the settings of your cameras menu to overexpose your shot by 1 stop as well, especially in full sun. Your cameras meter can be fooled by the bright light and automatically darken your image. Force it to see the scene for what it is, not what it thinks it is.
