CAPTURE DETAILS

On tripod, Canon 5DMk2, 28mm, F11, 1/100th sec, ISO 100, no filter, processed in Lightroom.

This image takes me back in time. I spent some time up on the bow of this old paddle steamer, and saw that a black and white image of the trip back to Queenstown, might give s sense of history in the modern era, although there appears to be nothing modern in the image. If you didn’t know the location, the snow capped ranges of the Remarkables sitting in the background add to the images perception that the old boat is arriving from off shore from somewhere far away.

PHOTO TIP

Shooting with a vision to convert your image to black and white can take some practice if you don’t have that setting. If your camera does have that setting, then use it to your advantage. I love black and white photography, as you can see from my work, but occasionally I like to stretch my ability to “see” in black and white when shooting colour. This means just seeing the tones for what they are. Highlights, mid tones and shadows. Everything is either, white, silver, grey or black. Remove the colour form your vision and you open up your ability to see how to expose your image more clearly.
