Down by the Willamette (River) that flows through Portland, I found myself able to watch the day life of many locals as they walked their dogs, exercised and generally enjoyed life by the river. It was a blustery, cold day, with clouds that swept by as if they were in a rush themselves. In colour, this was a fairly bland shot, but capturing it in some high contrast black and white gave it a lot more of a documentary feel.

PHOTO TIP

Go into your camera settings and increase the contrast, if you have this ability. Most DSLRs do. When you do this you increase the tension on the image. The way light and shadow intersect is important to define what is happening. You’ll find the more contrast in your image, the more of a reaction from your viewers.
