Occasionally I chase more abstract type images. I look for silhouettes and shapes. Subjects that don’t have to tell a story but rather depict a setting or item. This staircase was in a back corner of a building on the very edge of a pier in the Rocks, and I just loved the lines in all directions that made up it’s frame and shape. Sometimes its the simple things that inspire me.

PHOTO TIP

Playing with light and shadow can yield some interesting images. A three dimensional object can sometimes take on a two dimensional look. This will create shapes rather than a lit subject, which can sometimes redefine the subject altogether. Try going into your cameras menu system, and pushing your contrast settings to the max, and see what happens. If you don’t have those settings, edit in post by pushing your contrast setting. Don’t worry about the highlights getting too bright or the shadows getting too dark. That’s what were after. You’re in control of the result.
