I love the Grand Canyon, there are so many places where a great shot is possible. For this shot, I was told by a local Navajo that the colours of the canyon take on a painted glow in the evening. I decided I had to see this spectacle for myself. With nearly no cloud at all, I watched as the sun set across the last hour of the day. Nothing. I thought, oh well, not today. Then once complete sundown was done, the colours began. It was incredible. I just kept firing, not even looking through the viewfinder. I walked awe in awe of the Grand Canyon.

PHOTO TIP

Patience is a virtue they say, and on this occasion it was. I always stay after sunset, until I can hardly see my gear in the dark. I always teach my students to wait until darkness, because quite often a sunset isn’t done until it’s dark. The afterglow of sunset can light your scene in ways that you may not be able to actually see. But a long exposure will bring out some incredible detail. Don’t use any filters either, they’ll just serve to cause extra flare if you are shooting into a sunset.
