ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Inspiration, Portland Japanese Gardens – Steve Rutherford Landscape Photography Art Gallery

This is an unframed, limited edition collection landscape photography print of only 25 units. It is printed on Hahnemuhle Fine Art Pearl papers, structured to refract the highest values in colour and detail. It’s high-quality ink absorbing layer enables exceptional image quality with enormously detailed sharpness, and a very broad colour range, providing archival permanency of your artwork for over 100 years.

CAPTURE DETAILS

On tripod, Canon 5DMk2, 20mm, F11, 1/80th sec, ISO 200, no filter, processed in Lightroom.

To date this remains one of my favourite images ever. This tree was in the middle of the gardens and hidden behind two other trees. I was granted special permission for no longer than 2 minutes to lay carefully on the manicured undergrowth by the garden keeper. Deceivingly large, this tree stood only a few feet high, and I had to push the gardeners patience waiting for a burst of sunlight to light the beautiful red and orange leaves to give me the glow I was after.

PHOTO TIP

If you see a chance to get a great shot and it is not within access, ask for access. The worst you can here is no. I will often explain to the owner of the property my reason for wanting to showcase the subject on their property. I’ve even gifted a handmade print of the final image to land owners before, to prove I was not just taking advantage of them. This has helped me access the same on return trips. Never pass up the chance to request access to out of bounds areas, even if they ask a fee. More often than not the fee is worth it.
