ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Connected, Lowburn, Otago, NZ – Steve Rutherford Landscape Photography Art Gallery

This is an unframed, limited edition collection, landscape photography print of only 25 units. It is printed on Hahnemuhle Fine Art Pearl papers, structured to refract the highest values in colour and detail. It’s high-quality ink absorbing layer enables exceptional image quality with enormously detailed sharpness, and a very broad colour range, providing archival permanency of your artwork for over 100 years.

CAPTURE DETAILS

On tripod, Canon 5DMk2, 35mm, F6.7, 1/100th sec, ISO 100, no filter, processed in Lightroom.

As soon as I saw this church, I saw the electricity wires leading across onto a telegraph pole. I knew if I kept the pole out of frame and solely composed the church, it would appear as though the wires connected to the sky. I wanted to imply a direct connection between the house of God and the Heavens. I chose black and white as there was near no colour in the whole scene apart from the patch of sky and some dark green trees. For me colour would have been a distraction. I also loved the implication that the jagged trees on the left became smoothed out to the right. Do you go into church to be straightened out?

PHOTO TIP

Look carefully at your scene, does it need to be a black and white to strengthen it’s value?  Does it have a background that implies something that would directly affect the image? Can you connect your subject to something outside the frame to cause intrigue and wonder? This is getting to an advanced method of story telling bering all the components of a shot together, but this is how you see your images better. Take the time to look for them. I could have put a wide angle lens on this and walked up to capture the whole church on some obscure angle to cause a strange effect, but instead I chose a balanced single image, because the elements around the church added to the scene..
