One of my favourite black and white images, I captured this as I sat under the Sydney Harbour Bridge waiting for a storm to pass. A big dark shadow passed over the sails of the Opera House, causing it to silhouette against the last afternoon light behind it. I saw a connection between the storm clouds overhead and the shark jagged teeth-like shapes of the building and knew I had a string composition. Jaws was born.

Look for a play in shapes and string contrasts in your black and white photography. Spend time finding ways to compose your shot so as to define the subject in different ways. Dark edges against a light background, and vice versa. Remember to test your aperture and shutter settings too to make sure you maintain detail in the shadows and highlights.
